Five killed in French flat fire

FIVE people, including a child, have been killed and 18 others hurt in a pre-dawn fire in a Paris apartment building.

Rescue workers say they all lived in the same flat on the fifth floor of the six-storey building in a disadvantaged area of Gennevilliers, northwest of the capital, adding that the cause of the fire remained unknown.

Around 100 firefighters fought the blaze that began in the early hours of Wednesday in a fourth-floor flat.

Fifteen of the 18 people injured were taken to hospital. Two were firefighters who suffered hand burns.
